Welcome to Great Dog Training
Have you ever wished you were proud of your dog's good behavior instead of embarrassed or frustrated by your dog's bad behavior? We have all known someone with a dog that obeyed their owner's every command. Wouldn't it be great if you knew what they know? Unfortunately, dogs don't come with instructions and most owners fail to realize that at least some basic knowledge of dog behavior and dog training is an essential responsibility in pet ownership.

The primary reason the vast majority of dogs are given away, abandoned or run away is the result of troublesome behavior problems. Estimates of the number of dogs euthanized in the US during 2005 are on the order of 2.5 million with about an equal number being adopted. Many of the adopted dogs are often returned to shelters or rescue groups for the same behavior problems. This cycle can be broken with almost any dog as long as proper dog behavioral and obedience training is given.

Who's the "Pack Leader" in your House?
There are effective solutions to these most common dog training and behavioral problems that every dog owner can apply with commitment and proper guidance. The first step in beginning your dog's training is understanding pack social order and dog psychology. You will then be able to learn how your dog communicates and why he carries out specific unwanted dog behaviors like jumping, excessive barking and destructive chewing.

Dominance
Some behavior problems are often related to dominance issues with dogs. Signs of behaviors that exhibit dominance are nipping and mouthing, growling and/or baring teeth especially when asked to give up a resting place, food or a toy. Even a simple gesture, such as a hug, can be interpreted by a dominant dog as a challenge in some situations.

To better control dominance, you will need to acquire some basic concept of canine social structure. Within dog pack members, there exists a dominance hierarchy to maintain order and promote cooperation. The more dominant dogs control access to food, dens and mates. For domestic dogs, these attributes translate into food, toys, sleeping places and even attention among each family ("pack") member." Understanding how dominance is manifested in dog-people interactions is the first step in learning how to recognize and correct many unwanted dog behaviors.

Hole Digging

Some of our past clients have had problems with their dog digging holes. There are basically two types of diggers: 1) those that dig in your landscaping areas and, 2) those that just dig wherever they want to in your yard. Of course there are some of the hunting and tracking breeds that will dig if a wild animal's scent is present in a specific area, and sometimes even try to dig under fences. What we want to do is use the most successful solutions that have worked for us over the past twenty four years.

There are basically two approaches to eliminate digging:

1. Avoidance, and
2. Attainment.

When and how we use these approaches is clearly demonstrated and described in our "Dog Behavior Solutions"™ video.
