Dogs Bolting Through Doors
Does your dog bolt or run through doors as you try to catch him as he goes by. This is a very common problem with most dogs which are on the dominant side of the temperament scale rather than the more timid or sensitive side. When we ask people with dogs that are not timid who goes out the door first, invariably we find it is the dog. This is another indication of who the pack leader is, the person or the dog. Whoever goes out the door first is in control!
Changing this behavior to have the dog wait for instructions to go through doors, gates, or get into or out of the car, is fairly easy to do. The best time to start is when your dog is young so a habit isn’t established, but any dog can be taught to wait at any door until he is invited through it. The process takes only a few weeks of consistent instruction or a couple more weeks if you have an older dog that already has an established habit. The advantages are numerous and may prevent a situation that puts your dog in danger or stops your dog from bolting outside and running away.
