Jumping Dogs
Jumping is very acceptable behavior to dogs and used as a means of greeting, attention and play. It should be noted as normal dog behavior. The problem exists in that dogs don’t know that it is an unacceptable behavior for humans. When you come home or a guest enters the home your dog wishes to greet you or your guest as another dog and wants to give and receive attention and this is his way of showing it. Most dog owners often reinforce this problem behavior unknowingly. A jumping dog’s behavior can be controlled and modified using appropriate training methods.
There are five (5) simple humane techniques that we use to stop unwanted jumping behavior in dogs. We emphasize reinforcing positive responses to accomplish the desired change in behavior.
One thing we don’t do is to encourage our dog to jump and then correct him, which is a common method used by some trainers or behaviorists.
